Pen and Lens: Journeih’s Path to Artistic Expression

10th grader Journeih is looking to reignite her spark for writing. When she was younger, she was really into poetry and wrote several horror-themed short stories.

“In my free time, I really like to write,” Journeih said.

She’s also recently taken up an interest in photography.

“I finally got my first camera this year,” Journeih said. “So I just take it outside, and anytime I see something I think is beautiful, I take a picture.”

When looking at pre-college workshops offered at Temple University, two immediately stood out to her. One is called “Creative Writing,” and the other is called “Photo Storytelling.” She’ll be enrolled in both workshops this summer.

She’s hoping both workshops help her expand personally into a whole new world.

“I hope to learn to get out of my shell,” Journeih said. “I’ve always been really shy around others in general. So I just want the opportunity to be able to express myself in different settings.”

Journeih believes the experience will be one of two extremes.

“It will be really really good or really really bad,” she says. “I’ve gotten homesick before, but if I’m having a really good time, then I don’t even want to go back home.”

But she’s going into it with optimism.

“I’m hoping to meet a bunch of really cool people and enjoy my classes,” Journeih said.

She also hopes the courses will help her excel in her writing.

“I want to be able to publish some of my stories,” Journeih said. “I also want to get better at writing because I know I make errors and I want to know how to actually fix them.”

She’s also excited as one of her StreetSquash teammates and good friends Litzy is also taking a pre-college workshop at Temple University, albeit in Sports Management.

Journeih has been to Philadelphia before, both as part of the Squash and Education Alliance Changemakers Tour last year and also as a participant in Howe Cup. She’s excited to go back to the ‘City of Brotherly Love.’

“It’s calming,” Journeih said. “It’s so quiet over there compared to New York. And I love Wawa.”
