Seniors Honored at Eagle Academy Convocation Ceremony

Students Uphold High Standards While Representing Senior Class at Longtime Partner School

Javon, Djadly, Quinlan, Aaron, Amani, and Ajani sport their Eagle Blazers for the first time after the Eagle Academy Convocation Ceremony.

On Monday, November 19th, StreetSquash participated in the Senior Convocation Ceremony for Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark. 10 StreetSquash students in the Class of 2019 attended the ceremony, which included speeches from staff and students, as well as the presentation of the Eagle Blazers. “It was wonderful to join the school in recognizing the young men for their effort and hard work,” Squash Director Kingsley shared. “Honoring the students with the presentation of their Eagle Blazers, to be worn again at graduation in June, was motivating for the students, and I could not be more proud.”

All seniors, Eagle administrators, and families gathered at the Paul Robeson Center at Rutgers University Newark for the ceremony, sharing remarks about the students during their time at Eagle. Quinlan and Javon, who both joined StreetSquash as seventh graders in 2013, took center-stage, delivering speeches about their time as students at the school. “Hearing the boys reflect on their experiences and hopes for the future was my favorite part of the ceremony, especially having witnessed their growth over the last three years,” Program Director Ana shared. “The bond these seniors have is unlike any other; they are a brotherhood, holding each other accountable and making sure no one is left behind.”

Following the event, the students enjoyed the celebratory atmosphere with their classmates. Donning their Class of 2019 blazers, the students posed proudly for photos with friends, family, and staff. Many of the young men have been members of the StreetSquash team since they were in seventh grade, and have proven to be true ambassadors of the program.
