StreetSquash is excited to welcome the newest member of our academic staff, July Torres!
July joins us as an Academic Coordinator for our middle school students. A native of the South Bronx, she earned a degree in Media Studies from Bronx Community College before continuing her education at Lehman College, where she obtained a degree in English and Professional Writing with a minor in Linguistics.
After college, July began her career with AmeriCorps, leading a tutoring program for an elementary school in the Bronx. She later taught English Language Arts (ELA) to middle schoolers in New Jersey for two years. Recognizing the urgent need to address literacy challenges, July returned to AmeriCorps as a Volunteer Coordinator, where she trained and onboarded volunteers to support elementary students with literacy tutoring.
July’s passion for education and sports led her to StreetSquash, inspired by her experience at a similar sports-and-education organization.
“I’ve always believed sports can be a powerful motivator for students,” July shared. “I previously worked with an organization that combined lacrosse and academics, so StreetSquash felt like a natural fit.”
In addition to her work in education, July is a language enthusiast. She is fluent in English and Spanish, can read and write in Korean after a study abroad experience in South Korea, and is currently learning American Sign Language.
Welcome to the team, July!
