StreetSquash Cup raises over $1 million to support programming

On Saturday, May 7th StreetSquash held our 8th Annual StreetSquash Cup – our largest fundraiser of the year. Players and pros arrived at the building just before noon and headed down to the courts for a quick warm-up before the tournament commenced. Following brief introductions on court 3 by George and Senior Squash Director, Katie, players and teams dispersed to their respective courts and the competition ensued. With four extremely strong teams – the Racquet & Tennis Club, Union Club, University Club and the Harlem Squash Trotters, the competition was more than fierce – it was lethal!
The squash concluded around 3pm and everyone gathered back on court 3 for final words from George and the presentation of awards. Unfortunately the Union Club team, led by faithful board members Ed Shugrue and Andrew Fink, were unable to capture their “three-peat” they had worked so hard for (though they did win the award for best dressed!). The Racquet and Tennis Club, which featured world #16 Ryan Cuskelly and StreetSquash’s very own Raheem Logan, pulled out the major victory both on the court and in the fundraising competition with over $220,000 raised for the Cup! Alum Rakey Drammeh, ’10, concluded the speeches with a short and sweet speech about the impact of StreetSquash and how the program helped her get to where she is today.
The afternoon ended with some delicious Blue Smoke BBQ on courts 1 & 2, and many participants reporting that it was the best Cup to date!
All in all – the StreetSquash Cup raised over $1,090,000 and as always, raised awareness of the program through all of the help and hustle of our StreetSquash Cup captains.

Only 363 more days until the 9th Annual Cup!
