StreetSquash is excited to welcome Emma Fellows to the staff. She’ll serve as the High School Academic Coordinator working closely with our High School students. 

Emma grew up near Detroit and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English Writing and French from Northern Michigan University. During her time there, she tutored at the University Writing Center, and interned at a graduate-run literary journal. 

She briefly pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree at Northern Michigan University where she worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and taught Intro to Composition courses for the English department.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she deferred to The New School. She moved to New York City to receive her MFA in Creative Writing with a concentration in poetry. She earned her degree in 2023. 

Emma recently had her debut chapbook, Bird Girl published by Bottlecap Press. She also has works published in Hominum Journal which nominated her for “Best of the Net 25” Anthology. Hominum Journal submitted her work to the Nebraska Speech, Communications, and Theatre Association for their annual convention which supports and aims to encourage high standards of speech, debate, and theatre instruction at the academic, elementary, and secondary educational levels in Nebraska.

Most recently, Emma was a Humanities teacher for 7th grade at Success Academy Charter School in Brooklyn and was also a nanny providing private childcare in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. 

As soon as she saw a job opportunity at StreetSquash, she jumped at the chance to apply.

“I love being a part of educational spaces and processes, as well as holistically supporting individuals, which is distinctly clear in StreetSquash’s mission,” Emma said. “I was also a student-athlete my whole life, I competitively played soccer at school as well as with a club from ages 5-18, and competitively downhill ski raced starting in third grade, and continued to race in college. My experience with athletics certainly shaped the way I move through the world, providing me with a sense of agency and confidence, as well as understanding the necessity of camaraderie and communication. I’m really excited to be a part of the team at StreetSquash and meld my love of academics and athletics.”

Outside of work, Emma enjoys spending time with her cat, Nyx, walking, and trying out new places to eat. She also enjoys birding, poetry, and reading.
