StreetSquash is happy to welcome Anthony Islam to the College Access Success and Alumni Support (CASAS) department. Coming to us from AmeriCorps, Anthony will serve as the “Program Development NYC Civic Corps Member.”

He’ll be working with CASAS to help facilitate workshops and find internship opportunities for StreetSquash participants.

A native of Guyana, Anthony played squash for his country for 10 years, until the age of 16. In 2018, his family moved to Philadelphia where he finished out his last two years of high school and volunteered at our sister program SquashSmarts.

Anthony has a background in theater and went to Syracuse University for Theater Management with a minor in Disability Studies. He’s worked with students in theater and is also a former squash coach.

“I found out about StreetSquash through my former mentor at SquashSmarts,” Anthony said. “I was attracted to the organization because it was an opportunity for me to help kids whose shoes I was once in. I know how hard it is to balance squash while also having to be a student applying to colleges. I think that level of understanding is not something that a lot of people might have, so connecting to the students in that way is very important to me.”

In his free time, Anthony loves going to the movies. His favorite book is Frankenstein, and his favorite type of flower is tulips.
