Summer Discovery 2016

This year the StreetSquash Summer Discovery theme is focused around the many different regions of the world including African, Caribbean, Russia, South America, and Southeast Asia. Each week focuses on one of these regions and through various activities such as mask making for the Caribbean, painting Matryoshka dolls for Russia, and designing a paper lantern for Southeast Asia. Throughout the week, we offer a variety of electives that keep our students’ minds sharp which include Hip Hop dance, science experiments, Shark Tank, yoga, and many more. At the end of each week, we take the students on fields trips that pertain to that week’s theme. Some of our favorites included a group dance lesson with an African dance program called Wula Drum, a trio to the “CariBeing,” in one of the most heavily Caribbean influenced neighborhoods in Brooklyn, an informative and entertaining tour of the New York Hall of Science in Queens, and an interactive visit at the Museum of the Moving Image. Needless to say, our students and staff were kept extra busy this summer! We would like to especially thank our dedicated Summer Staff, Edlynn, Kelly, Kingsley, Sanaya and Taylor Von for their commitment to our StreetSquashers throughout the entire summer!
